Mind Over Limits — What If You Didn't Know You Couldn't?
I was scrolling through my Facebook feed the other day when I came across a post about a mathematician. Normally, that wouldn't strike me as particularly interesting. Except I'd first heard the details of this story years ago, and suddenly it hit me as a perfect example of what "Mind Over Limits" really means. I already had another blog idea in mind, but I put it on the backburner — this story was too good an illustration of the Conquest Mindset to pass up. And, fortunately or unfortunately depending on your perspective, my ADHD brain went into overdrive (as it does) and I thought of a second, even more visceral example that fits the same idea. Since the mathematician story might otherwise read a little "nerdy" to some of you, let's start with the second one first.
Both stories demonstrate something remarkably simple: sometimes your biggest limitations aren't physical, intellectual, or even circumstantial. Sometimes they're the limitations your own brain puts on you. And sometimes, all you need is a different way of looking at the challenge.
The 500-Pound Barrier
In my younger years, I was fascinated by bodybuilding, professional wrestling, and weightlifting — to me, they all seem to go hand in hand. One story that stuck with me involved the 500-pound clean and jerk. For years, 500 pounds represented an almost mythical barrier in weightlifting. Lifters kept getting close, but nobody had successfully put 500 pounds overhead in competition.
Then came Vasily Alekseyev. The massive Soviet weightlifter had become one of the strongest men in the world, and by 1970 he was pushing the limits of what people thought was humanly possible. He'd repeatedly come close to the 500-pound mark but couldn't quite get there — and the barrier wasn't necessarily his physical strength. It was the number itself.

At the 1970 World Weightlifting Championships in Columbus, Ohio, Alekseyev finally did it. He clean and jerked 501.5 pounds, becoming the first man to lift more than 500 pounds overhead in competition. Here's the fascinating part: his "Mind Over Limits" technique was surprisingly simple. He didn't know he was lifting 500 pounds. His coaches had reportedly told him he was attempting 497-499 pounds depending on who retells the story, while the bar had actually been loaded with more. This didn't make him stronger — it removed the psychological barrier by removing his awareness of it.
Vasily Alekseyev Already Had the Strength
What changed was his belief about what he was capable of doing. And once he'd lifted the weight he believed was within his capabilities, the mental barrier was gone. The effect didn't stop with him, either. Within a week, Serge Redding of Belgium became the next man to clean and jerk more than 500 pounds. Ken Patera of the United States — an elite weightlifter before he became famous as a professional wrestler, which is likely how I learned this story in the first place — broke through the same barrier in 1972, clean and jerking 503½ pounds at the U.S. Senior Nationals in Detroit.

The important part isn't just that these men were incredibly strong. It's what happened once the barrier was broken. 500 pounds went from something nobody had ever done to something that could be done. The physical challenge hadn't gotten any easier — the perception of what was possible had changed. And once that happened, other people followed.
Meet George B. Dantzig
Which brings me to the mathematician — George B. Dantzig. (Not to be confused with Glenn Danzig, one-time frontman of The Misfits. Completely different guys.)
In 1939, Dantzig was a doctoral student at UC Berkeley, studying statistics under the renowned mathematician and statistician Jerzy Neyman. He already held a master's degree in mathematics and had worked as a statistician before arriving at Berkeley — clearly a sharp guy, and no stranger to hard problems. One day, he showed up late to one of Neyman's classes and found two problems written on the blackboard. Assuming he'd missed the assigned homework, he copied them down, took them home, and got to work. They were tough — noticeably harder than a normal assignment — but he eventually solved both and, a few days later, apologized to Neyman for taking so long to hand it in.
There was just one catch: they weren't homework. They were two famous unsolved problems in statistical theory.
Dantzig had no idea until about six weeks later. One Sunday morning, Neyman showed up at his home, excitedly waving papers — he'd written an introduction to one of Dantzig's solutions and wanted to submit it for publication. That was the moment Dantzig finally understood what he'd actually done.
He later recalled that if he had known the problems were famous unsolved problems, he might have become discouraged and talked himself out of even trying.
Sit with that for a second.
The Power of Not Knowing
There's an obvious, inspirational takeaway here: if you don't know something is impossible, you can accomplish anything. It's a great line. It's also a little too simplistic.
Dantzig didn't solve those problems because ignorance handed him magical mathematical powers. He was extraordinarily talented — a master's degree, real experience as a statistician, and a doctoral spot at Berkeley under one of the top statisticians of the era. He had the skills. What he didn't have was the psychological baggage attached to those particular problems. He wasn't thinking "nobody has solved this" or "who am I to solve it" or "if smarter people couldn't crack this, I probably can't either." He was thinking something much simpler: this is my assignment, I need to figure it out.
That distinction is enormous. The problems themselves hadn't changed. Dantzig's ability hadn't changed. What changed was the meaning he attached to the challenge in front of him. As far as he knew, it was just difficult homework — so he approached it like difficult homework. He didn't waste time deciding whether he was qualified to attempt it. He just tried to solve it.
What Happened Next?
The story would already be remarkable if it ended there. It didn't. Those two problems became the foundation of Dantzig's doctoral dissertation, and he went on to have an extraordinary career in mathematics, statistics, and operations research. He developed the simplex algorithm, one of the foundational techniques of linear programming — work that made it possible to mathematically tackle enormously complex optimization and resource-allocation problems in transportation, production, logistics, military planning, and supply chains. He's widely regarded as one of the founding figures of operations research and linear programming, and Stanford has called the simplex algorithm one of the great algorithms of the 20th century. In 1975, he received the National Medal of Science for his contributions to mathematical programming.
There's a wonderful little detail buried in all of this: the two "homework" problems that started it all eventually became part of his PhD thesis. So the sequence essentially went — "Oops, I'm late" → "I guess this is homework" → "This homework is really hard" → "I solved it" → "Wait… those weren't homework problems?" → two research breakthroughs → a PhD thesis → one of the most influential mathematical careers of the 20th century.
That's a hell of a story.
The Limit Isn't Always Where You Think It Is
This is where the two stories come together. Alekseyev already possessed the physical strength necessary to lift more than 500 pounds. Dantzig already possessed the mathematical ability necessary to solve those problems. Neither man became more capable because of how he approached the challenge — what changed was the limit each man believed he was facing. For Alekseyev, the number 500 had become a psychological wall. For Dantzig, the problems simply didn't come with a reputation attached. He didn't know they were supposed to be beyond him.
I'm not suggesting that simply believing you can do something means you automatically can. Reality still exists. There are genuine physical, intellectual, financial, and circumstantial limitations in life, and you can't just wish them away. But we often stack another layer of limitation on top of the real ones. We tell ourselves what we're capable of before we've actually found out. We decide something is too difficult, too late, too complicated, too expensive, too far outside our comfort zone, too much for someone like us. And once we accept that conclusion, our brain goes looking for evidence to prove us right.
Sometimes the challenge really is beyond us. But sometimes we're standing in front of a 500-pound barbell we're already strong enough to lift — we just haven't convinced ourselves of it yet.
What If You Didn't Know You Couldn't?
That's the lesson I take from both of these stories. Not that you can accomplish absolutely anything if you just believe hard enough — that's not reality. The lesson is more useful than that: don't automatically accept the limitations attached to a challenge. Question them. Test them. And when you can, temporarily set them aside and see what happens when you simply attempt the thing in front of you.
Because sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't the difficulty of the challenge. It's what we've been told about the difficulty of the challenge.
George Dantzig didn't know he was supposed to be intimidated. Vasily Alekseyev didn't know he was lifting more than 500 pounds. In both cases, the limit wasn't necessarily where they thought it was.
That's what Mind Over Limits means. Not pretending that limits don't exist. Not believing positive thinking can magically overcome reality. But refusing to assume a limit is real until you've actually tested it — because you might be surprised by what happens when you stop asking "Can I do this?" and start asking "What happens if I try?"
