Neuroplasticity: You CAN Teach an Old Dog New Tricks
I don't know about you, but I was a fan of MythBusters — before The Discovery Channel got rid of The Build Team, recast the show, and eventually cancelled it altogether. It was the perfect show for my naturally curious, naturally ADHD brain (a combination that makes a lot more sense to me now than it did back then). Entertaining, educational, and always willing to poke a hole in conventional wisdom.
All stuff right up my alley.
Sitting down to write about neuroplasticity, I kept thinking about one episode in particular — March 14, 2007, (yes, I looked it up) about dog myths. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman took a pair of untrained, middle-aged Malamute Huskies and tried to disprove the old saying: you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
You've probably already guessed how that turned out: Busted.
Which is a relief, honestly — it would've been a little awkward to bring this up otherwise.
They never used the word "neuroplasticity" in the episode. But that experiment is about as good a demonstration of the concept as you'll find.
So What Exactly Is Neuroplasticity?
In simple terms, neuroplasticity is your brain's ability to change.
For a long time, people assumed the brain was basically finished developing by a certain age — set in its ways, done growing, done adapting. But that's not how it works. The connections between neurons can strengthen, weaken, reorganize, and rebuild themselves in response to what we learn, what we experience, and how we behave.
Put simply: what you repeatedly do reshapes how your brain works.
And this isn't limited to childhood. Neuroplasticity continues throughout your lifespan — the brain is more adaptable early on, sure, but research consistently shows that adult brains keep changing in measurable ways in response to new learning and new experience.
That distinction matters more than it might seem.
Because if your brain is still capable of adapting, learning, and rewiring itself, then your age isn't a life sentence. It doesn't mean you're permanently stuck being whoever you've been so far.
Maybe you've had the same habits for twenty years.
Maybe you've believed the same things about yourself for even longer.
Maybe somewhere along the way, you decided you're just "not good at" something — and never questioned it again.
Too old to start a business. Too old to learn a language. Too old to get in shape, learn an instrument, switch careers, or finally build the discipline you've always wanted.
Maybe you even tried once, and it didn't work.
But failing at something doesn't mean you're incapable of it.
It might just mean your brain hasn't finished learning it yet.
Potential Means Nothing Without Practice
Here's where it gets interesting.
Learning isn't just about absorbing information — it's about repetition. Every time you deliberately practice something new, you're strengthening and refining the neural networks involved in that behaviour.
Think about anything you've gotten genuinely good at. Driving. Typing. A sport. Cooking your go-to meal.
You're not consciously working through every step anymore. What used to take real concentration now just... happens.
That's neuroplasticity at work.
And here's the part I find even more interesting: neuroplasticity isn't just about learning new things. It's also about changing patterns you've practiced for years.
Maybe you've spent years procrastinating whenever something feels overwhelming. Maybe you've developed a habit of avoiding things you're afraid you won't be good at. Maybe you've trained yourself to automatically reach for your phone whenever you're bored, uncomfortable, or trying to concentrate.
Those patterns didn't appear overnight. They were reinforced through repetition.
And the same principle works in the other direction.
You can practice doing things differently.
You can replace avoidance with action. You can practice pausing before reacting. You can build a habit of starting instead of procrastinating. You can learn to approach a difficult task differently than you did five years ago.
The old pattern doesn't necessarily disappear overnight. But as you repeatedly practice the new one, you give your brain another pattern to strengthen.
That's why consistency matters so much.
Motivation gets you off the starting line. But repetition is what actually teaches your brain the new pattern.
And that has real implications for how we think about growth.
Neuroplasticity and Success
This is where neuroplasticity stops being a neuroscience fact and starts being genuinely useful.
You can't just wake up one day and decide to be a more disciplined, focused, confident, or resilient version of yourself. That's not usually how lasting change works.
You have to practice being that person.
Want more discipline? Start doing the thing you're tempted to skip — consistently.
Want to be more organized? Practice organizing.
Want to communicate better? Communicate more, on purpose.
Want to be an entrepreneur? Learn, apply, screw up, adjust, try again.
Want to be physically stronger? Train.
Want to be mentally tougher? Do things that scare you so that they no longer do. Do hard things, and let yourself learn that hard isn't the same as impossible.
Every repetition is another signal to your brain about the pattern you're building.
To be clear, this isn't "manifest it through positive thinking." Neuroplasticity isn't magic, and it's definitely not the excuse-friendly self-help nonsense you see floating around online.
You still have to put in the work.
But here's the encouraging part: the work itself is the process. You're not waiting for confidence to strike before you act — you're building confidence by acting. You don't need discipline first; discipline shows up because you practiced. You don't need motivation to move; movement is often what creates it.
Action, repetition, and experience are what drive real change — in business, in your career, in your life.
Your Brain Likes Exercise Too
Here's another reason neuroplasticity fascinates me: exercise doesn't just reshape your body. It reshapes your brain.
Aerobic exercise has been linked to higher levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that plays a key role in neuron growth, survival, and plasticity. Studies have also connected regular exercise to better memory, sharper learning, stronger executive function, and measurable structural changes in brain regions tied to cognitive control.
Translation: going for a run, taking a brisk walk, or riding a bike isn't just cardio. It's brain training.
And that connection matters more than people realize.
It's hard to build a business when you're running on empty.
It's hard to bring your best to work when your brain feels foggy.
It's hard to stay disciplined with no energy left to draw on.
Taking care of your body won't guarantee success on its own. But it builds the kind of environment your brain — and by extension, you — actually needs to perform.
Same principle as always: small, consistent actions compound into real change.
Neuroplasticity and ADHD
This is the part that hits closest to home.
I have ADHD.
And one of the biggest things I've learned is that ADHD isn't just "being distracted" or misplacing your keys now and then. It touches attention, working memory, impulse control, planning, organization, and executive function — the exact tools you need to actually get things done.
But a brain with ADHD isn't a hopelessly broken brain. Neuroplasticity gives us a much better way to think about it: not as a limitation, but as something that adapts.
Research suggests that exercise can improve executive function and help with some ADHD symptoms, and there are several possible mechanisms behind those effects, including changes in neurotransmitters, blood flow and neuroplasticity. There's also solid evidence for cognitive behavioural therapy as an effective treatment for adults with ADHD, particularly for reducing symptoms and building real-world coping strategies.
That distinction matters.
Managing ADHD isn't about becoming a person who no longer has it. It's about understanding how your specific brain operates and building strategies around that — for some people that's medication, for others it's therapy, exercise, organizational systems, coaching, environment changes, or usually some mix of all of it.
The goal was never to white-knuckle your way past ADHD through pure willpower.
The goal is giving your brain the tools and experience it needs to function better.
Those are two very different goals.
You're Not Stuck
Maybe that's the real takeaway from all of this.
We talk about ourselves like our current state is permanent.
I'm just not disciplined. I've never been good with money. I'm terrible with technology. I'm not a business person. I'm too old to start over. I've always been this way.
But hiding inside every one of those statements is a dangerous assumption: that who you are today is who you're locked in as forever.
Neuroplasticity says otherwise. Your brain keeps adapting to new experience across your entire life. That doesn't mean change is effortless, or that age is irrelevant, or that wanting something badly enough magically erases every obstacle.
It just means change stays possible. Full stop.
And that matters, because maybe you've been trying to change something for years. Maybe you've failed more than once. Started, stopped, started again. Maybe you're a little embarrassed you're still working on something you assumed you'd have figured out by now.
So what?
Your brain isn't keeping score of your past failures. It's responding to what you keep practicing, right now.
Give it a minute, and you can probably name a dozen people who never looked "naturally gifted" at anything, yet ended up successful anyway — often because of the late start, not despite it. I don't even have to look very far for an example. I'm not sure I qualify as "successful" myself. Despite being labelled "gifted" all through school (which is its own strange irony once you understand ADHD) — I always felt like I started late at everything. When Pink Floyd sang, in the song Time, "No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun," I sometimes wonder if they'd met me.
And yet here I am, in my mid-fifties, building my second business from scratch — figuring out an online store, the backend optimization nobody warns you about, social content, then better social content, then branding it, then turning it into video, then blogging on top of all of it. Is it easy? Not even close. (Seriously — you have no idea how much of this has felt like a fight some days.) But the more reps I put in, the easier it gets, the sharper my skills get, and the better the end product becomes.
Teach the Old Dog
Remember those dogs from MythBusters?
Not puppies. No advantage of youth or a blank slate to work with. Just a couple of middle-aged dogs being asked to learn something brand new.
And they did it.
That's really the lesson here — not just that an old dog can learn new tricks, but that we're often too quick to decide what someone (including ourselves) is capable of, based purely on what they've done up to this point.
That includes you.
Doesn't matter if you're 25, 45, or 65. Doesn't matter if you've spent the last decade doing something completely unrelated to what you actually want to do next.
Start learning. Take the course. Start training. Read the book. Build the business. Learn the skill. Break the habit. Try again. You don't need to transform your entire life by tomorrow morning. You just need to give your brain something new to work with today.
You can teach an old dog new tricks.
And maybe the one who most needs to believe that... is you.
